Bone Music

State censorship was a scary thing in 1950’s Soviet Union. Western music had a big following, but owning or distributing vinyl was illegal and resulted in jail time.  Two Gentlemen by the names of Ruslan Bogoslowski and Boris Taigin had an idea to beat the system. They got their hands on old X-Rays from hospital trash bins and old medical archives and developed a way to write music directly to the X-Ray’s.

The X-Ray’s would be cut into rough circles using scissors and then sold for 1 Ruble ($.018 US). The audio quality on “X-Ray audio” or “Bone music” discs was poor, and the discs themselves could only be played a few times before they would break. I’ve included the documentary below.
