Game on

I haven’t turned my X-Box on in exactly 1 year.  I discontinued my live account 6 months ago because I simply just stopped using it.  A year before though I loved it.  Online gaming, streaming apps for sports and news, Netflix, etc..  I really liked the first person shooter games like Call of Duty, problem solving games like Metal Gear Solid, and sports games like the NHL Hockey games.  Then one day, I just didn’t.

I moved a year ago so at first I didn’t have cable or internet set up until I could take care of things like the 1st months and all of the moving costs. By the time I was settled I realized I had filled my time with other things and didn’t really miss it.  Thinking back though I had a pretty good run.

Pong – I remember being bored at my Grandma’s house so my Mom dug out the Atari and I played a little bit of pong but became infatuated with the airplane dog fights!  The graphics blew me away.

Rampage – I’d save every quarter I could find then after my soccer games my brother and I would run to the local laundromat where they had only 2 arcade games, one of them being Rampage.  Destroying a building as a huge monster was hours of fun.

Double Dragon – my brother and I actually conquered this game in the arcade. I think it took around $20.

Nintendo – I used to go hang out with my Uncles on the weekend and the youngest had a Nintendo, he was so rich!  Pitfall, Dig Dug, Mario Bros, Duck Hunt, and my favorite: Burger Time.

Contra – I remember stopping by my cousin’s house and two of them were playing Contra.  I was too intimidated to join as they were burning through levels and had memorized what to do at the exact right time. UUDDLRLRAB Select Start.

Contra

Sega – I talked my parents into finally letting me own an actual game system.  The Sega Genesis.  I remember putting a blanket over the screen to play at night so my parents would see the blue glow under their door down the hall.  That and yelling, “Damn it Tails!!”

Sonic

Playstation – ah yes, the PS1.  I was at a college party (still in high school though) and it was a floor party, just walk into any room and party.  Walked into one room & these 3 stoners were ignoring the party and playing Resident Evil.  My precious little mind was warped and I bought the game and the system the very next day.

What about you?  Let me know what games defined the moment for you.  I’ll continue with part #2 next week.
